The College of Education counselor education master’s program is the recipient of the 2021 Outstanding Master’s Counselor Education Program Award, given by the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. This award recognizes a master’s program that guides, supports and promotes counselors-in-training to be the next great generation of counselors. Directly impact the diverse population of Chicago by working in our Education and Counseling Center. This learning laboratory offers a variety of programs and events for children and teens. You’ll gain experience providing individual and group counseling to school-aged children. Gain the knowledge and clinical training to become a licensed mental health professional, with a focus on the issues affecting the LGBT population. Counselor Education typically receives between 60 to 80 applications each year and invites about 25 students to interview, with the final class is comprised of 18 to 21 students divided evenly between the school counseling and higher education concentrations.

The doctoral CACREP-accredited program in Counseling and Counselor Education [Ph.D.] is designed to prepare dedicated, knowledgeable, skillful, ethically responsible, and socially and culturally aware professionals for the 21st century. The Advanced Counseling Certificate in School Counseling allows individuals with master’s degrees in counseling or closely related clinical fields to meet the requirements for Georgia certification in School Counseling. This certificate program tailors coursework to meet the individual’s specific needs for certification, as determined by a review of the individual’s academic record and the current certification requirements.

In the past five years, 100% of our school counseling graduates passed the TExES school counseling certification exam. With an emphasis on urban school settings, our curriculum includes practicum and fieldwork experience. The program is approved by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), and graduates are eligible for MSDE certification as school counselors. With full-time and part-time program sequences, students have a maximum of five years to complete the program.

Applicants who have no clinical training or who need more than 18 semester hours for certification are not eligible for the Advanced Counseling Certificate in School Counseling. The mission of the program in Counselor Education is to provide all master’s level students with the latest methods, theories, and techniques of the discipline and to provide a field experience that will allow for a theory-to- practice developmental training approach. And unlike counselors, counseling psychologists more often conduct psychological assessments and administer diagnostic tests. While some counselors may return to school to earn a doctorate in counselor education, you need a Psy.D., Ph.D., or Ed.D. The sixty semester hour, online Counselor Education Program’s core curriculum consists of 48 semester hours of required coursework that is completed by all majors, regardless of concentration. The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is designed to prepare licensed professional counselors who will work with children, adolescents and/or adults in community agency settings. The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program meets the academic and internship requirements for licensure as a professional counselor (LPC) in the State of Mississippi. At the end of their coursework, students are eligible to sit for National Counselor Exam (NCE) to become a Provisional Licensed Professional Counselor (P-LPC). This provisional license is the first step to full licensure offered by the Mississippi State Board of Examiners for Licensed Professional Counselors.

The course of study is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and the core required courses in the program meet the eight CACREP core areas required by most states for licensure. In addition, students will gain professional knowledge, skills, and practices necessary to address a wide variety of circumstances within the clinical mental health counseling context. The M.Phil.Ed. Program in Professional Counseling prepares students to become Certified School Counselors and/or Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs). This two-year program is designed to provide the highest level of counselor preparation for work in schools, community mental health agencies, universities, and private practice. Many of our graduates elect to go on to doctoral level study in counseling or clinical psychology, human development, or a related field. The School Counseling Program is designed to provide prospective school counselors with the knowledge, skills, and competence necessary to establish and conduct effective developmental guidance and counseling programs in schools, kindergarten through the twelfth grade.
